Reiterations: To flit - 2024

Panoramic view of the pieces that were on display in the gallery.

Large scale collage prints from the series, Borrowed wings/Something borrowed (2017-present), on display as “Reiterations: To flit“  in the Grey Area Gallery at the Aberdeen Music Hall in downtown Leeburn  from June 8, 2024 - September 29, 2024.

For this exhibit I wanted to print large scale versions of a selection of ten collage  works, that are otherwise quite small. These works were chosen from an  ongoing collage series I started in 2017 called "Borrowed Wings." I  selected pieces that were created across a range of years that  for me, would tell the story of my emotional growth and healing since  the work began in 2017. I blew them up, some to 20x the original size, to print them  larger than ever for a grand visual effect in such a small gallery, and so you could see all the paper edges and glue  marks, magazine print pixels and other beautiful imperfections you  maybe wouldn't notice on the originals. I want the viewer to feel overwhelmed  by their size, relate to the imagery, enjoy the imperfections. I enjoy  hearing from the onlookers regarding which images speak to them. It's a  small gallery in a beautiful repurposed church in Leeburn, ON; a very small  peaceful place, which seemed an ideal location for my work. When I  started this series my life was very chaotic and challenging. I was lost  in stress and the demands of life and parenthood, and illnesses, and  family, addictions and finances, and struggle. Since the beginning of  this work I have learned to let go. To find the calm within myself. This  show allowed me to blow up the images that helped me to survive some of  the toughest years of my life. I am grateful to them and to the art of  collage. I was also grateful for the opportunity to show my work as I  have not been active in the community for the past couple of years and  was worried about becoming irrelevant. I am left feeling renewed and  reminded of how powerful and freeing it can be to be open about the pain and joy you  feel, as well as the mundanity of it all as you live through life.
